Moldova and Switzerland are strengthening cooperation on regional security, democratic resilience and support for Ukraine’s recovery. These priorities were at the centre of a meeting between Moldovan and Swiss diplomats focused on current regional challenges and opportunities for closer international coordination.
On 21 September, Victor Chirilă, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine, met with Heidi Grau, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to the Republic of Moldova, based in Kyiv. The discussions covered Moldova – Switzerland cooperation, the regional security environment and opportunities to coordinate with international partners in support of Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
The meeting highlighted the importance of international cooperation in strengthening Moldova’s resilience, supporting democratic institutions and contributing to greater stability across the region.
Moldova – Switzerland Cooperation and Regional Security
Regional security was one of the key topics of the meeting. The diplomats exchanged views on the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the Republic of Moldova, as well as humanitarian efforts and measures aimed at addressing the wider consequences of the war.
The discussions emphasised the importance of strengthening Moldova’s capacity to respond effectively to evolving regional challenges.
In this context, Victor Chirilă and Heidi Grau also addressed the need for closer international coordination and stronger cooperation with partners to support regional security and stability.
For the Republic of Moldova, cooperation with international partners remains particularly important in an environment shaped by security challenges, humanitarian pressures and hybrid threats.
Switzerland’s Support for Moldova’s Democratic Resilience
Another important area of discussion was Switzerland’s support for Moldova’s democratic institutions and institutional capacity.
The diplomats discussed initiatives aimed at strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s resilience to hybrid threats and supporting the country’s ability to respond to complex contemporary challenges.
These efforts are also relevant to Moldova’s European integration process, as institutional resilience, democratic development and effective governance remain important elements of the country’s continued transformation.
Moldova–Switzerland cooperation in these areas contributes to stronger institutions and supports the Republic of Moldova as it continues its European integration path.
Moldova’s Role in Ukraine’s Recovery and Reconstruction
The meeting also focused on the Republic of Moldova’s potential contribution to Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
Victor Chirilă and Heidi Grau discussed opportunities for coordination with international partners and potential areas of cooperation that could contribute to Ukraine’s recovery while strengthening regional stability.
Ukraine’s reconstruction is not limited to rebuilding physical infrastructure. It also involves supporting communities, restoring a sense of security and creating conditions for long-term and sustainable development.
For neighbouring Moldova, participation in international dialogue on Ukraine’s recovery is also closely connected to broader regional stability and the future development of the region.
International Cooperation for a More Resilient Region
The dialogue between Moldova and Switzerland reflects the importance of strong international partnerships in addressing shared security challenges, strengthening democratic resilience and supporting Ukraine’s recovery.
Cooperation with Switzerland provides opportunities to strengthen Moldova’s institutional capacity, improve resilience to hybrid threats and support the country’s European integration process.
At the same time, closer coordination on Ukraine’s reconstruction contributes to a broader dialogue about the region’s shared future – one based on security, resilient communities, international cooperation and sustainable development.
