Valentine’s Day or Dragobete?

As February whispers the first hints of spring, we’re greeted by two beautiful celebrations of love: Valentine’s Day on February 14th and the traditional Romanian holiday of Dragobete on February 24th.

Valentine’s Day, a globally recognized holiday, sees lovers around the world exchanging cards, flowers, and heartfelt expressions of affection. With roots tracing back to the Roman Empire, it’s become synonymous with St. Valentine, a figure who secretly married couples in defiance of the law.

Dragobete, on the other hand, is a celebration of nature’s awakening and young love, deeply rooted in ancient Slavic folklore. It’s said that on this day, birds begin their search for a mate, and humans, too, are encouraged to express their feelings. Traditionally, young people would gather for lively festivities, singing and dancing, while couples would seal their love with a kiss, hoping for a year of togetherness.

Whether you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day or embrace the unique traditions of Dragobete, the essence remains the same: to fill the world with love, warmth, and sincerity. May this season be a time of harmony, unity, and inspiration to build bridges between hearts!
