The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine continue to deepen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, focusing on regional energy security, infrastructure resilience, and integration into the European energy market. Strengthening strategic energy partnerships remains a key priority for both countries amid ongoing regional challenges and preparations for the upcoming autumn-winter season.
Moldova – Ukraine Energy Cooperation: Focus on Energy Security and Infrastructure
The development of energy cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine was the central topic of the meeting between Victor Chirilă, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine, and Vitalii Zaichenko, Chairman of the Management Board of Ukrenergo.
During the discussions, the parties addressed the expansion of interstate energy connections, increasing the technical capacity of cross-border interconnectors, and implementing new infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening regional energy resilience. Particular attention was dedicated to the construction of new electricity transmission lines that will improve the balancing capabilities of the energy systems of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and Romania.
According to Vitalii Zaichenko, one of the main priorities for both countries remains effective preparation for the winter season and the continued modernization of interstate energy infrastructure.
Strengthening Bilateral Dialogue and Regional Energy Resilience
Ambassador Victor Chirilă expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian side for its rapid response and cooperation during emergency situations and emphasized the importance of maintaining active bilateral dialogue in the energy sector.
The Ambassador also highlighted Moldova’s readiness to exchange expertise regarding the implementation of European Union directives into national legislation and called for closer expert cooperation between the two countries in support of European energy standards and reforms.
Integration of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Energy Market
A major milestone for both states remains the synchronization of the energy systems of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova with the continental European ENTSO-E network, achieved on March 16, 2022.
Today, integration into the common European electricity market continues to be one of the key strategic priorities for Moldova and Ukraine. Achieving this goal requires legislative harmonization, infrastructure modernization, and the implementation of advanced technical solutions aligned with European standards.
Shared Energy Stability and Strategic Partnership
The parties also discussed agreements on emergency energy assistance in the event of electricity surpluses within the energy systems of both countries. Such mechanisms are expected to improve the efficiency, flexibility, and stability of balancing national energy systems.
In addition, the meeting addressed regulatory and technical issues related to the maintenance of power transmission lines crossing the Ukrainian – Moldovan border.
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine continue to demonstrate unity, mutual support, and a shared commitment to strengthening energy security, regional stability, and full European integration through strategic cooperation in the energy sector.
