High-Level Meeting between Moldova’s Minister of Environment and Ukraine’s Ambassador
On May 19, 2025, Sergiu Lazarenсu, Minister of Environment of the Republic of Moldova, held a working meeting with Paun Rohovei, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova, to discuss enhanced bilateral cooperation on environmental protection.

The meeting centered on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as environmental protection, sustainable management of water resources, safeguarding the Dniester River basin, and implementing joint ecological monitoring of transboundary facilities.

The discussions highlighted the importance of effective water resource governance, flood risk mitigation, and coordinated climate change adaptation strategies. Moldova reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its environmental partnership with Ukraine to address shared challenges.
Addressing Regional Environmental Threats Amid Ongoing Conflict
The parties also addressed the significant environmental risks resulting from the ongoing full-scale military aggression against Ukraine. These challenges include water contamination, infrastructure damage, and broader ecological impacts affecting the entire region.
Cross-Border Environmental Concerns: Dniester Hydropower Complex and Moldovan Thermal Power Plant
The environmental impact of the Dniester Hydropower Complex and Moldova’s Thermal Power Plant on border regions, particularly in Ukraine’s Odesa region, was reviewed. Both sides agreed to continue consultations aimed at reducing cross-border pollution and enhancing ecological safety.
Commitment to Constructive Dialogue and Sustainable Environmental Development
The Republic of Moldova continues to advocate for international cooperation, shared responsibility, and sustainable development in environmental protection. Preserving the Dniester River basin remains a vital and unifying priority for both Moldova and Ukraine.
