Strengthening Moldova – Ukraine Relations: High-Level Political Consultations Held in Kyiv

On June 18, 2025, a new round of interagency political consultations between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine took place in Kyiv. This reaffirmed the shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across strategic sectors.

High-Level Representation and Format

The Moldovan delegation was headed by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sergiu Mihov. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian side was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Oleksandr Mishchenko. The consultations were held in a constructive and trust-based atmosphere, highlighting the strategic nature of Moldova – Ukraine relations.

Key Areas of Bilateral Cooperation

The two sides reviewed a broad range of priority issues, including:

  • Enhancement of political dialogue;
  • Expansion of trade and economic cooperation;
  • Strengthening of collaboration in humanitarian, infrastructure, transport, energy, environmental, educational, and cultural fields.

Reactivation of the Moldova – Ukraine Intergovernmental Economic Commission

Particular attention was paid to the relaunch of the Moldova – Ukraine Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. It was co-chaired by Mr. Mihov from the Moldovan side. The participants also stressed the importance of revitalizing sectoral commissions and working groups. This is to ensure the effective implementation of joint projects.

Common Security Agenda and Support for Peace

In the context of the ongoing Russian military aggression against Ukraine, State Secretary Mihov reiterated Moldova’s unwavering support. This support is for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. It is based on the principles of international law, the UN Charter, and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Advancing European Integration

A dedicated session was held on the European integration aspirations of both countries. The Moldovan and Ukrainian sides emphasized the importance of mutual political support. They also stressed regional cooperation in achieving full EU membership, which is a shared strategic objective.

Cooperation in International and Regional Organizations

The consultations also included discussions on enhancing cooperation within multilateral forums. This was particularly regarding reciprocal support for nominations and initiatives in United Nations structures and other regional bodies.

Commitment to Continuous Strategic Dialogue

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Mihov and Mr. Mishchenko reaffirmed the commitment of Moldova and Ukraine. They are committed to maintaining a permanent, open, and forward-looking dialogue. This ongoing engagement is seen as the cornerstone for building a resilient and future-oriented Moldova – Ukraine strategic partnership.
