From Kyiv, the Republic of Moldova’s Energy Minister, Dorin Junghietu, conducted an official visit aimed at deepening bilateral energy cooperation. The visit also focused on enhancing regional energy security. It highlights Moldova’s commitment to integrating its energy market with Ukraine and the broader European Union energy network.
The Moldovan delegation included Sergiu Aparatu, Director of the state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica. Eugeniu Buzatu, Acting CEO of Energocom, and Valeriu Chiveri, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine, were also part of the delegation.
Key Discussions on Energy Cooperation
During high-level talks with Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, key topics critical to regional energy stability were addressed:
● Ensuring energy supply security and preparing for the 2025–2026 heating season;
● Strengthening electricity import and export mechanisms;
● Enhancing natural gas storage and utilizing the Vertical Corridor for efficient gas distribution;
● Coordinating emergency responses for the maintenance of critical energy infrastructure.
The ministers also examined strategies for decarbonizing the energy sector. They focused on expanding renewable energy development, deploying new nuclear technologies, and advancing Moldova’s and Ukraine’s European integration processes.
Minister Junghietu emphasized:
«We value Ukraine’s close cooperation in the energy sector. In preparation for the upcoming heating season, we are exploring opportunities for electricity supply from Ukraine. Our joint efforts pave the way for integrating the energy markets of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union’s single energy market».
Minister Grynchuk added:
«We are confident that the energy partnership between our countries will remain strong and long-lasting. Our shared objectives and values support our joint vision of full integration into the European energy community».
Engagement with NPC «Ukrenergo»
A dedicated session with NPC «Ukrenergo» leadership focused on increasing cross-border interconnection capacity and updating cooperation agreements. They also explored new electricity supply opportunities from Ukraine. Vitalii Zaychenko, Chairman of NPC «Ukrenergo», underscored the institution’s role in maintaining balanced operations within the Ukraine – Moldova energy block. He also emphasized supporting Moldova amid the challenges posed by Russian aggression.
Strengthening Regional Energy Market Integration
Both sides discussed the construction and restoration of cross-border high-voltage lines. The organization of joint capacity allocation auctions, and the progressive integration of Moldova’s and Ukraine’s energy markets into the EU single energy market were also discussed. Collaboration with ENTSO-E, where Moldelectrica currently holds observer status, was highlighted as a strategic opportunity.
Minister Junghietu’s visit reaffirmed the strategic energy partnership between Moldova and Ukraine. It emphasized the development of green technologies, regional energy security, and full integration into the European energy space.
